Dear 5 year old Emeli.......

Dear Emeli Sofia,

My princess, my chiquita, mi niƱa linda!

Happy 5th birthday! Today you are 5! Its such a huge milestone.....  As I lay here next to you watching you sleep I can't help but thank God for your life, for choosing me to be your mom and for letting me experience such a love. You are everything I didn't know I needed.

You are one brave young lady. And though you just started kindergarten less than two weeks ago, you have already matured so much into following directions, making friends and being away from grandma or family for such a long period of time. It probably makes it easy you already know so much from your alphabet, to colors, and simple math. This past year has brought ypu lots of growth. Its a big difference to when you cried everyday refusing to go to pre-k.

Its awesome to see your personality blossom and watch you become the unique you you are right before my eyes. You love swimming!!! And fashion trying different colors, hairstyles and accesories everyday. You love helping me cook or bake anything anytime. You are definitely momma's helper from sorting laundry to folding and putting things away. You love it when we paint our nails the same color and you love to discuss my make up and hair with me as if giving me a professional opinion. Coloring and painting is probably your favorite activity. And at this moment, you enjoy tea parties or playing restaurant pretending to be my server and writing my order on your flower notepad.  You love "dress" pajamas and frozen blanket for bedtime. And you are so happy you finally got your first pair of sparkly flip flops.

With us, you are just  so loving. You want to hug us and kiss us and snuggle all the time. You love big hugs and a thousand kisses at the same time and I could just melt into it. You love your big brother so much and though you'd deny it, you try to be like him im so many ways. I love how you think about him even when he's not around and like.to do nice things for him like pick up his shoes or save candy and treats for him.  I love how you love to tell silly jokes at dinner or start your stories with the singy voice "today in school"......You are very sentimental and love that you still get to see grandma everyday though you guys don't spend the whole day together anymore. You love us to tell you stories, pray with you and fall asleep in your big bed. Your favorite food.is.pizza and you could eat it everyday if I let you. Your favorite color is purple and your favorite special is Spanish.

You have learned so much responsibility having Riley for a year as a dog to  call your own. You make sure he is fed, given treats and you walk him with me everyday. You love to hug him and carry him as if he is your baby amd he loves you and lets you do it.

At this point in your life you haven't quite drcided if you want to be a princess or a singer when you grow up. You also think your husband and you will go out and share desserts like mommy and daddy do. You have your first loose tooth and you are looking forward to losing it as it means you are growing bigger. You are shy with others at first but then you open up and are so sweet and talkative and have the cutest bashful smile when you look to me as if waiting on my approval.

Baby girl, I wish you would stay 5 forever because these are all my favorite things about you. You are loving life, being brave trying new things, making new friends amd continuing to be the fearless girl you have always been. I love your smiles, your giggles, and even the way you can cry at the drop of a dime.

As you grow up, I want you to remember how I sing to you all these old songs like "total eclipse of the heart" when I ask you to turn around, or like when you finish off the temptations with "my mom" after I sing "My girl".

But most of all, no matter how old you get may you always remember whose you are. God loves you Eme and has created a Purpose for you bigger then I could dream. I can only pray you walk out His purpose in your life. I pray that you continue to know Jesus loves you and wants whats best for you. And that as your parents we believe you can set out with big dreams because we will be praying all of them come true. We pray you shine your bright light and make a difference in this world!!! We pray that He continues to put that giving heart in you that wants to give money away to the homeless. Or that he uses your friendly compassionate heart to reach out to kids who feel alone.... or your talents to glorify Him in all you do.

I pray that as your mother, I can be an example of a godly woman and a testimony as to what the love of Christ can do to a person's life. I pray we can grow closer and closer every day and look at the stars together sipping hot chocolate talking about our day, our prayer requests and our goals. I pray that everyday you are making good choices, loving others and living for Him.

My 5 year old Emeli, your life is just beginning..... and I pray we can see God's story unfold in your life. I love you my Eme!

16 and Married!

As most of you may already know, I wasn't 16 and pregnant, like the popular MTV show. Instead I was 16 and married. Yes married before I graduated, or officially got my driving license. Married before I got an actual job and before I knew what marriage was really going to require.     I met my husband my freshman year in high school and for many months only looked at him as a friend to share my "boy" drama with. But after many lunches, conversations, hanging out, inviting him to my church, dancing at my quince, and skipping many electives together, I was in love with my homeboy, my friend. And all of a sudden, all the guys that I was entertaining as potential suitors didn't matter anymore. Not after Emerald called my house on a Tuesday night while I was watching American Idol, to confess his love for me. I remember seeing his family name on the caller I.D and almost falling off my bed to get the phone to tell him my sister wasn't home. My

Like ME!

How many likes will this get? Living in the social media age we live in, its often a question we ask before posting anything. A thought, our lunch, a new outfit, or an accomplishment in school or our career. Last week in school, my son was nominated to run for president of his kindergarten class as they learned about president's day. When he came home he told me he wasn't sure if they liked him and would vote for him. Of course, with me, that sparked a life conversation with him. "Not everyone is going to like you Manny, and that's ok!". I could even hear my moms voice in my head (in Spanish of course) telling me the very same thing growing up. I had to reassure him that all he could do was keep being the Emmanuel he is. With all his knowledge, likes, dislikes, habits, and mannerisms that are individual to him; he has to know he doesn't need anybody's approval to be just that. (except his parent's right now, but authority is another topic). I&#

Love Does......

With Memorial day coming up and Emmanuel telling me all about learning about the armed forces and the sacrifices our troops make, I couldn't help but think about what Love does. They say there is no greater love than that which would lay their own life down for another, so for that great sacrifice lets thank all those who are serving and those who have served or lost their life while doing so. Funny thing, is that in the past week I also heard a song about love like no other. About love doing things not for who may see, or what we may get but just because love Does. Love is an action, a commitment, a decision to do and not just say or "feel". Not all of us are called to serve in the military nor will we always have the chance to physically lay our life down for others, but Loving is something we all get to do! Loving in my marriage and as mother, has taught me how sacrificial it ought to be. Even with the man I chose to marry, and the kids that came from my womb a
